Miranda glowed with contentment as she finished drying her hair. Sweet Pete. So gorgeous, with the most beautiful body sheâd ever known. And he knew exactly what to do with it â unlike some.
Sweet Pete. As theyâd snuggled up together afterwards, his honeyed words had acted like a balm. Had he really murmured that she was just the woman he needed? Heâd been so sensitive too. âYour situation is, er, delicate,â heâd said, kissing her on the shoulder. âIâm not into rocking boats. Our secret. Promise.â
Just at that moment, theyâd heard Anna and Munchkin arriving and heâd bolted out of the room. Bad timing. A few seconds later and sheâd have had the chance to explain her situation. Still, sheâd be able to set the record straight very, very soon.
Could she and Pete get away with not being found out? Like her, he couldnât face the general piss-taking that would inevitably follow if everyone else in the chalet found out about them. She could imagine Sam and Martinâs reaction. Ideally, they could all work it out for themselves when she got into the Porsche for the journey home.
Anna returned from the shower. Miranda stared at her as if for the first time. âYouâve got a-mazing bone structure.â
âHave I?â Anna smiled shyly.
There was a knock at the door. âPretty please, my hairdryerâs playing up. Can I borrow yours?â Munchkin sat on the edge of Mirandaâs bed and seemed in no hurry to leave. âDid Martin tell you what happened? Dreadful business.â
âPete thinks all this about taking on three of them is rubbish.â Able to say his name, Miranda smiled.
âReally? Oh. Poor Nikki though, mustâve been terrifying for her.â
âHer new skis must help ease the pain.â Anna rubbed her cropped hair with a towel. Sheâd been bored stiff when Martin showed them off to her, repeating verbatim what the salesman had said.
âWhat a lovely present.â Munchkin sighed. âMust be nice to have a boyfriend who spoils you that much. Charlie good at gifts? Who won the race?â
âPete.â Another smile. âBrilliant style, terribly athletic.â
âSpeaking of skiers â¦â Munchkin looked furtively round the room and lowered her voice. âI saw something rather intriguing today.â
âWhat?â The other two were curious.
âWell â¦â Munchkin got up to check the door was closed. âStrictly entre nous â¦â Miranda nodded impatiently. âA certain person not a million miles away was getting on extremely well with their ski instructor.â
âFlora?â Anna frowned. âAnd that guy we saw this morning?â
Munchkin nodded.
âExtremely well?â asked Miranda.
âExtremely well,â repeated Munchkin.
âGetting on or getting off?â demanded Miranda. Munchkin squirmed excitedly. âNo,â breathed Miranda. âYouâre joking.â
âWhen?â Anna quite forgot her scruples about tittle-tattle.
âAt the Savoie at lunchtime,â hissed Munchkin. âI was upstairs on the terrace and they were sitting below me. Didnât have a clue I was there.â
âGo on,â urged the other two.
âThey sat there gazing into each otherâs eyes for simply hours, murmuring sweet nothings. Transfixed by lust, obviously. Body language. It never lies. And then I donât know how it happened but while he was eating he caught her hand with his knife.
