Miranda glowed with contentment as she finished drying her hair. Sweet Pete. So gorgeous, with the most beautiful body she’d ever known. And he knew exactly what to do with it – unlike some.

Sweet Pete. As they’d snuggled up together afterwards, his honeyed words had acted like a balm. Had he really murmured that she was just the woman he needed? He’d been so sensitive too. ‘Your situation is, er, delicate,’ he’d said, kissing her on the shoulder. ‘I’m not into rocking boats. Our secret. Promise.’

Just at that moment, they’d heard Anna and Munchkin arriving and he’d bolted out of the room. Bad timing. A few seconds later and she’d have had the chance to explain her situation. Still, she’d be able to set the record straight very, very soon.

Could she and Pete get away with not being found out? Like her, he couldn’t face the general piss-taking that would inevitably follow if everyone else in the chalet found out about them. She could imagine Sam and Martin’s reaction. Ideally, they could all work it out for themselves when she got into the Porsche for the journey home.

Anna returned from the shower. Miranda stared at her as if for the first time. ‘You’ve got a-mazing bone structure.’

‘Have I?’ Anna smiled shyly.

There was a knock at the door. ‘Pretty please, my hairdryer’s playing up. Can I borrow yours?’ Munchkin sat on the edge of Miranda’s bed and seemed in no hurry to leave. ‘Did Martin tell you what happened? Dreadful business.’

‘Pete thinks all this about taking on three of them is rubbish.’ Able to say his name, Miranda smiled.

‘Really? Oh. Poor Nikki though, must’ve been terrifying for her.’

‘Her new skis must help ease the pain.’ Anna rubbed her cropped hair with a towel. She’d been bored stiff when Martin showed them off to her, repeating verbatim what the salesman had said.

‘What a lovely present.’ Munchkin sighed. ‘Must be nice to have a boyfriend who spoils you that much. Charlie good at gifts? Who won the race?’

‘Pete.’ Another smile. ‘Brilliant style, terribly athletic.’

‘Speaking of skiers …’ Munchkin looked furtively round the room and lowered her voice. ‘I saw something rather intriguing today.’

‘What?’ The other two were curious.

‘Well …’ Munchkin got up to check the door was closed. ‘Strictly entre nous …’ Miranda nodded impatiently. ‘A certain person not a million miles away was getting on extremely well with their ski instructor.’

‘Flora?’ Anna frowned. ‘And that guy we saw this morning?’

Munchkin nodded.

‘Extremely well?’ asked Miranda.

‘Extremely well,’ repeated Munchkin.

‘Getting on or getting off?’ demanded Miranda. Munchkin squirmed excitedly. ‘No,’ breathed Miranda. ‘You’re joking.’

‘When?’ Anna quite forgot her scruples about tittle-tattle.

‘At the Savoie at lunchtime,’ hissed Munchkin. ‘I was upstairs on the terrace and they were sitting below me. Didn’t have a clue I was there.’

‘Go on,’ urged the other two.

‘They sat there gazing into each other’s eyes for simply hours, murmuring sweet nothings. Transfixed by lust, obviously. Body language. It never lies. And then I don’t know how it happened but while he was eating he caught her hand with his knife.
